New world challenge: Masini re-launches beyond every disability

Everything is ready for the races on track: world title in Rio at the stake. «Discipline to discover, the goal for me is to experience»

Castiglione. The intense 2018 of Giancarlo Masini is about to come alive. The Castilian Paralympic cyclist on March 18 will fly to Brazil, where he will compete in the World Championships on the track in the Rio de Janeiro category that gave him the greatest thrill of his second life as a sportsman: the time trial bronze medalist at the Paralympics 2016, in the C1 category. A further step towards the Masini number one goal: the world time trial on the road to be held in August in Maniago (Pordenone).

Giancarlo, how do you prepare it for the important events of this year?

“It proceeds very well. Currently I am regaining confidence with the track taking advantage of the nearby Montichiari Velodrome. The withdrawal with the National team in view of the Rio World Championships will start on Thursday, then it will be time to think about the start ».

The track is giving satisfaction, among other things, to the Italy of cycling, like the gold of Filippo Ganna.

«Among the able-bodied people, the movement is gathering fruit now that it can have a structure like that of Montichiari. As for us paraciclisti we will present ourselves in Rio with the desire to do well but without nourishing big ambitions. We will be in three Italians: in addition to me the other two medaled in the last Paralympics Fabio Anobile and Andrea Tarlao. The goal is to collect important points for the ranking in view of Tokyo 2020 “.

What is your relationship with the track, considering that your greatest successes have you collected on the road?

“It’s not easy to go to the track for me, especially because the work I’m doing is focused on the road. It’s a bit like football to go from eleven to five to five. Furthermore, in many disciplines there is the start from a standstill and for my disability it is important to reach and keep a constant speed “.

In which disciplines will you try your hand at Rio?

“I will do the Scratch, or the test with starting line and final sprint, which is the one that amuses me the most. Then I will participate in the 1000 and 3000 meters in pursuit and at the Olympic speed. It will be a good competition, I have seen the list participants and there are almost all the best ».

Your main goal for 2018 is the world time trial title at the Maniago World Championships, which will be held in August. How are you preparing?

“I’m working hard, I’ve never even stopped in the winter. It can be said that now I’m getting used to the way of pedaling that imposes my disability, improving the hold on the distance and strengthening the muscles more stressed. I hope the path is suitable for my characteristics: I would like a long and wavy time trial so I can play my cards ».

To assist you with an exceptional trainer, the former professional Adriano Malori, who left the competitions in 2016 after a serious injury.

«Yes, it is a good shoulder and knows well what it means to be strong in time trials, given that it won the U23 World Cup category and finished second in 2015 at the World Championships. He prepared a specific program on this discipline, with tables that I have never followed before. I’m sure they will bear fruit. ”

Does Giancarlo Masini’s commitment continue even when he gets off the bike?

“I’m pursuing a personal path of mine in which I meet the students in the surrounding schools. I like contact with the boys. I like listening to their questions and transmitting my experience. I think it’s first and foremost because they are careful not to get hurt and then to make them understand that even from misfortunes like these you can leave and continue with your own life “.
