Who we are
Cycle Portland works to support and inspire visiting cyclists and local commuters alike, thanks to quality repairs, guided bike tours and convenient and well-maintained bicycle rentals. Today we continue this mission as we look for tourist guides interested in showing the city we love. As part of our small team, you will have the opportunity to advise travelers about your favorite local attractions and hotspots, drive guests to the city as part of our easy bike tours and lend a hand to the store as we continue our goal of providing excellent service to our community through our full-service bicycle shop in downtown Portland, OR.
Although it is mainly focused on tour guide, this position is multidisciplinary in nature. This position includes the guide of two tours a day (4-5 hours of outdoor time) during our Foodie, Brewery or City tours. During the time at the store, you will help customers follow our bicycle rental process, answer general questions about the products and services we offer and help you keep the store running smoothly. You will also have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of our city in the past, present and future as we work to keep our tours engaging, entertaining and informative.
Knowledge and skills in the following areas are preferred (but not required) and represent key strengths as part of this position.
Real desire to work and listen to the public both as a tour guide and as part of the store staff to meet customers in their needs
Excellent ability to speak in public and the convenience of working with and projecting to the public up to 12 people at a time
Strong skills in verbal and written communication
Curiosity! We love getting to know Portland and sharing that passion with others as the stories of our city and our region evolve
Ability to focus and knock out smaller projects taking into account the larger cycles that occur during our operations
Self-motivated and comfortable to ask for support when needed
Ability to regularly lift bicycles and other items up to 55 pounds, however it is possible to make reasonable accommodations for qualified applicants
Experience in performing arts, in previous bicycle shops and in the tourist guide, even if not necessary, is an advantage
This position is suitable for people who are oriented towards the goal and who share their knowledge and experience with others. Our travel guides interface directly with the public and provide comfort in providing guidance, assistance with the journey and helping customers plan their visit to Portland. Although we are sometimes known as tours and rentals, we deeply appreciate our connections with our local riders, friends and commuters trained in the last 10 years. In this position you will have the opportunity to continue these relationships with our cycling community, while you will form many new ones as we meet a myriad of extraordinary travelers who try to learn more about the city we call home.
