An email just hit our inboxes showing what appears to be Movistar’s 2020 Canyon team bikes, which look pretty much like last year … with one major exception: there are no Campagnolo components. Movistar and Campagnolo have raced together since the team’s inception, and from what we can remember, the relationship dates back even further in the team’s history, with the Reynolds and then Banesto racing days through the ’80s and ’90s.
That relationship had looked in the rocks in recent months with Campagnolo having not yet announced its sponsorship for the team in 2020. And according to the photo falling into our inboxes, and then backed by a closer look at Movistar’s own Instagram account, it sure seems that SRAM is set to take over the Spanish team’s sponsorship for both the men’s and women’s teams.

With the SRAM-sponsored Katusha-Alpecin team gone, such a move makes lots of sense for what’s now the only Canyon-sponsored team in the men’s WorldTour. In that sense the new 2020 bikes are likely to effectively be Movistar-coloured versions of what Katusha-Alpecin raced in 2019 (albeit most likely with different saddles and tyres).
SRAM are strong proponents of disc brakes, and both Katusha-Alpecin and Trek-Segafredo had already made the move to disc-only for the 2019 season. Our money is on Movistar likewise racing exclusively with disc brakes in 2020.
We’ve reached out to representatives of SRAM and Canyon for comment but haven’t yet heard back. While this leak is likely quite true, it’s expected the news will become official at the start of the 2020 season.
