Chantal Blaak wins Omloop Het Nieuwsblad

Chantal Blaak took a solo victory at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, attacking between the Muur and the Bosberg to come into Ninove alone, giving her Boels-Dolmans team its first win of 2019.

The Bosberg sits shortly after the Muur van Geraardsbergen, and Dutch champion took advantage of a strung-out field to create a gap that nobody could close.

A chase group formed behind, made up of Blaak’s teammates Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans) and Jip van den Bos, Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (CCC Liv), Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM), Marta Bastianelli (Virtu Cycling), Annemiek van Vleuten (Mitchelton-Scott), Flortje Mackaij (Sunweb), teammates Elisa Longo Borghini and Ellen van Dijk of Trek-Segafredo.

Bastianelli took the sprint for second, followed by van den Bos.

Van Dijk was the most active of the chasers, making several moves in the final kilometres in an effort to bridge across. Blaak continued to extend her lead, peaking at over 50 seconds with five kilometres to go.

It was something of a breakthrough ride for the 22-year-old van den Bos. The young Dutchwoman has shown promise, but this marks her first trip to a semi-classic podium.
