Police arrest the spectator who caused a crash on the Tour’s opening stage

French police have reportedly found and arrested the spectator who caused a massive crash on the opening stage of the Tour de France.

According to RTL, she has been placed into custody in Landerneau, the town that hosted the finish of stage 1, accused of unintentionally causing injuries.

With around 45 km to go on Saturday’s opening stage, the spectator was facing the television moto, which was in front of the pack, with her back to the approaching peloton while holding a sign that protruded into the road. Tony Martin (Jumbo-Visma) collided with the sign and went down, causing a domino effect that saw others hit the deck in a crash that spread across the road.

The spectator reportedly fled the scene after the incident.

That evening, the ASO said that it would file a complaint, and then on Sunday the gendarmerie opened an investigation and put out a call for witnesses.

As of Wednesday, the spectator is in custody and facing the possibility of charges that carry a fine of €1,500, with the potential for further financial implications depending on whether anyone else involved with the incident files suit.
