On April 28, 2021, a team of 12 amateur cyclists will begin riding from San Diego, California to Charleston, South Carolina aims to raise $5000 per rider and $2500 per support team member to raise money to help in the fight against cancer.
The group is called the Challenge to Conquer Cancer (C3). Formed in 2007, the C3 began riding our bikes from Greenville, South Carolina to Austin, Texas in 2008. The bike teams rode 6 hour shifts, 24 hours a day, until the arrival into Austin. These rides were in initially conjunction with the LiveStrong Foundation. The Austin rides continued for 5 years. In 2011, the C3 moved its ride from Greenville to arrive in Lewiston, Maine. The chang in route was in conjunction with Patrick Dempsey and the Patrick Dempsey Foundation Cycling Challenge. The group has raised almost $2 million since we began almost 14 years ago. Not bad for a local, fully volunteer group of bikers!
Last year, COVID cancelled the Maine ride, although a small group rode the entire Blue Ridge Parkway as a fund-raiser. This year, one of the members came up with a wild idea, and several of us bought into it. This time, our route will be across the southern United States, and our route will take us from San Diego, California to Charleston, South Carolina, almost 3000 miles. Our planned arrival into Charleston will be May 7. We will ride as teams of 2 or 3 cyclists and will ride 6 hour shifts 24 hours a day, the teams leapfrogging across the USA in (we hope) 10 days. Each rider must raise a minimum of $5000 to ride and the support team member must raise at least $2500. We plan to symbolically dip our front tires into the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, and then dip them in the Atlantic when we arrive into Charleston!

Our funds go to the Prisma Health system’s Cancer Center and its Center for Integrative Oncology and Survivorship (CIOS) is one of the first of its kind in the nation; providing a holistic approach to increase quality of life and decrease potential cancer risks. The center houses a multidisciplinary team of professionals consisting of physicians, nurses and other health professionals that either provides direct services or referrals for patients throughout their cancer experience.
The healthcare team assists the patient with the many choices in complementary and supportive therapies available to each patient and their caregivers. The Challenge to Conquer Cancer ride helps fund many of the CIOS services including: lung cancer screening, smoking cessation, oncology rehabilitation, acupuncture, genetic counseling, nutrition counseling, yoga, massage, and music therapy.
We also support The Cancer Association of Anderson is the only local cancer charity in Anderson County. Our mission is to help reduce the burden of cancer on Anderson County residents battling cancer by providing treatment-related financial assistance, information and referral as well as emotional support.
We also support The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in Lewiston, Maine, who provides free support, education and wellness services to anyone impacted by cancer. Since our doors opened in 2008, the Dempsey Center’s contacts have increased consistently, demonstrating the need for our services.
